There is a category of designer object that almost never appears in the boutique window, rarely gets photographed for a campaign, and yet is quietly beloved by the people who collect it: the things the great fashion houses make for the desk, the hallway table, and the shelf.
A brass miniature of a Louis Vuitton trunk. A porcelain tray from Hermès for the keys you drop by the door. A glass paperweight from Gucci that holds down nothing in particular and looks wonderful doing it. These are pieces you live alongside rather than carry, and because they were made in far smaller numbers than handbags, they are genuinely difficult to find.

The Miniature Trunk
Louis Vuitton began in 1854 as a maker of travel trunks, and the Mini Malle is the house paying tribute to its own origin: a small trunk in zinc and brass, complete with corners, clasps and a lid that opens. It functions as a paperweight, a jewelry box, or simply as an object that anchors a shelf.

The Vide-Poche, or Change Tray
The French have a lovely word for the little dish by the front door: vide-poche, literally "empty pocket." It is where the keys, the coins and the watch land at the end of the day. What is a vide-poche?
It is the French term for a small tray or dish — literally "empty pocket" — placed by a door or on a desk to hold keys, coins, a watch or rings at the end of the day. Change tray, catch-all and trinket tray all describe the same object.
Why are designer home objects harder to find than bags?
They are made in much smaller quantities, often for a single season, and some are produced only for particular markets or as gifts with purchase. Fewer were made to begin with, and fewer still were kept, so they appear on the pre-owned market far less frequently.
Are these display pieces or can they be used?
